Bigs & Little NYC Mentoring

2025 Annual
Report

We are grateful for our family—our Bigs, Littles, Parents, Staff, Board and Donors with whom we work to make good things happen every day.

Dear Friends,

Each week across New York City, young people and mentors make a simple but powerful choice: to show up for one another. In parks, libraries, and neighborhood cafés, they talk through challenges, celebrate milestones, and build trust over time.

These relationships often connect people whose lives might not otherwise intersect. They may span differences in background, experience, or perspective, yet they are grounded in curiosity, consistency, and care. We see it every day: a mentor helping a Little prepare for a school interview; a first-generation student navigating unfamiliar systems with trusted guidance; two people learning from one another with openness and respect. In the process, mentors discover that serving deepens their own sense of purpose and connection. For young people, what begins with consistency grows into confidence, resilience, and possibility. The impact may be quiet, but it is lasting — for young people, for families, and for our community.

This work is only possible because of you. To our volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters who give their time and heart. To our dedicated staff, whose care and professionalism sustain every match and family we serve. To our Board of Trustees, whose leadership and stewardship strengthen our foundation. To our Junior Board, rising leaders who champion this mission and expand our reach. And to our generous donors whose investment ensures every match is carefully supported and every family feels less alone — thank you.

As we look ahead, we do so with humility and resolve. We cannot predict every challenge, but we can choose how we respond — by investing in young people and in one another. Your generosity this year strengthened not only individual matches, but the foundation of our organization and the future of our city.

In the pages ahead, you will see these relationships in action. They reflect something essential about New York: when we show up for one another, we all move forward.

With gratitude,

Linda DeCorato Perrotta

Community-Based Mentoring

Mariella & Tyler  ·  Matched May 2025

Mariella, a 12-year-old student at MS 297, joined Bigs & Littles NYC after experiencing bullying, social isolation, and emotional challenges at school.

Despite these difficulties, she remains passionate about dance, cheer, gymnastics, and track, with dreams of attending an HBCU and becoming a majorette dancer.

She was thoughtfully matched with Tyler, a 26-year-old Strategic Planning Manager at American Express and former cheerleader, creating an immediate connection through shared interests.

Since being matched, Tyler has provided consistent mentorship through fun activities and steady emotional support.

The relationship has helped Mariella build confidence, manage conflict more constructively, and feel more supported at home and school.

Her mother has observed meaningful improvements in her behavior, emotional regulation, and willingness to seek help.

In Loving Memory of Marie Wallace Powers (1934–2025)

It is with deep gratitude and fond remembrance that we honor Marie Wallace Powers, a cherished past Board Trustee and longtime supporter of Bigs & Littles NYC Mentoring. Marie passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, at the age of 91.

Marie’s commitment to our mission was rooted in her lifelong dedication to education, service, and community. A graduate of Marymount College and Columbia University, she devoted her early career to teaching and later brought her leadership, wisdom, and generous spirit to our Board. Her contributions helped shape our work and expand opportunities for young people across New York City.

Over the past decade, Marie began directing special support to our emergency funds — often describing this assistance as “heaven sent” for families facing sudden hardship with nowhere else to turn. She understood that timely help at critical moments could make all the difference and responded with both compassion and conviction.

Through a meaningful legacy gift in her will, Marie ensured that her commitment to Bigs & Littles NYC will continue for generations to come. We are profoundly grateful for her extraordinary generosity and hope her example will inspire others to consider the enduring impact of planned giving.

Marie’s legacy lives on in the lives she helped shape and in the future she so thoughtfully invested in.
